Jess’s Fave Five Kickstarters of the Week 10/18/19

Jess: Happy Friday all! Let’s dive right in to what’s cool on Kickstarter right now!

When I was a kid, I really wanted to be a paleontologist/archaeologist and, in Fossilis, I can now live out those dreams! In the game players take on the roles of paleontologists who are unearthing a newly discovered dinosaur graveyard. On your turn you can take 2 actions to either dig, possibly gaining trace fossils which can be exchanged for tools,  or extract precious bones. You gain points for your bones, but can score big by finding a complete set.

Fossilis stands out for its’ 3D dig site board. It has holes that will be filled with dino bones and then covered with sand, clay, and stone tiles. I love the idea and it looks like fun for all ages. Chcek out Fossilis here on Kickstarter.

The Zorro Dice Game

Zorro is ready to retire and pass his sword onto the next daring swashbuckler of justice. Will you prove to be a worthy successor? In the Zorro Dice game you can find out. During the game you will be rolling dice to try to perform heroic feats and defeat bad guys. You can collect equipment that will make it easier to defeat your ultimate foe. Whoever defeats the big villian at the end of the game wins.

Games like Zorro the Dice Game often feel action packed as you never quite know what the dice will do and I like that there is a rule that you can ask for help from other players; allowing them to gain a bonus. If you like dice based games, make sure to check out Zorro the Dice Game on Kickstarter here.

Block Happy

Block Happy is a take-that/strategy card game based on emotions. During the game you will be trying to collect happiness (often at the expense of your fellow player’s own happiness). You start with a hand of emotion cards and each turn you will play 1 card and then either take a new card or battle it out with another player. Each emotion card has a different power that can help you find your happiness, block your opponents, steal cards, and more. First player to get 7 happiness cards wins.

While I’m not much for take-that games, Block Happy is super cute and will most likely appeal to families, with its light gameplay. If you’re looking for a quick, goofy player vs. player game, check out Block Happy on Kickstarter here.

Spire’s End

Andrew and I are really enamored with games that feel like old-school gamebooks and Spire’s End looks to capture that feeling in its co-op/solo scenario driven gameplay. The game is played out over chapters represented by decks of cards. Each card offers you a bit of the story and a situation (ie. a choice, a monster to fight, etc…). Some choices may ask you to discard cards from the deck, meaning that the game has some replayability if you make different decisions.

This campaign is for the first six chapters, but the creator says the second half is already in the early stages of development. I really like the art design and the story looks excitingly mysterious, dark, and gritty. Investigate Spire’s End here on Kickstarter.

FLOAT Series Wave 3!

The F.L.O.A.T. series are pocket sized games being released in sets of 3’s by Concrete Canoe Games. In this campaign they are funding Cards of Olympus, A Wizard’s Shelf, and This IS Rocket Science.

Cards of Olympus, is a deck building game where players are gods trying to gain control of Olympus. They use a neat mechanic where each card is split featuring a combination of Mortals, Heroes, Gods, and Monsters.

A Wizard’s Shelf is a quick play card drafting game about gathering ingredients and casting spells. The spells you cast can affect how the game is played giving the game a bit more strategy.

Lastly, inThis IS Rocket Science players are trying to gain points by landing on or orbiting planets. You’ll be drafting and combining cards to gain enough rocket fuel to reach a planet, but considering your cards are also the planets you are trying to reach, you need to make some tough decisions about which cards to play.

This campaign is a great way to pick up a handful of games that are perfect for traveling. Take a look at the F.L.O.A.T. series 3 on Kickstarter here for more info.
