Portal Games Announces Abroad: A Travel Game That Inspires Real Journeys

Portal Games has revealed plans to release Abroad, a European travel-themed board game, at Gen Con this August. The game will hit retail shelves in September 2026.

About the Game

Created by Brazilian designers Rodrigo Rego and Danilo Valente (who previously worked together on Landmarks), the game centers on exploring European destinations through location cards. Players take on the role of travelers discovering different cities and landmarks across the continent. The game accommodates 1-4 players, is recommended for ages 8 and up, and takes about 60-90 minutes to play.

The game is being published through a partnership between Portal Games (known for titles like Robinson Crusoe and Detective: A Modern Crime Board Game) and German publisher 1 More Time Games.

Strong Early Reception

Abroad launched in Germany in September 2025 and sold through its entire first printing before the SPIEL convention ended. It currently has a 7.9 rating on BoardGameGeek and was recognized on the Fairplay Scout Voting’s Hidden Gems list.

The Spiel des Jahres jury took notice of the game’s cross-cultural appeal. Jury member Udo Bartsch commented that the game “feels like it unites people across borders” and “celebrates the beauty of Europe” without getting caught up in politics or travel restrictions.

Reviewers have noted an interesting real-world effect: players often share their own travel experiences during gameplay, and some have even reported being inspired to plan actual trips to destinations they discovered in the game.

International Expansion

With the English release, Abroad will be available in nine languages, with seven more translations planned for later in 2026.

The game will debut at Gen Con in Indianapolis this August before its September retail release.
