Katana Review

Katana is a game of simple mechanics.  Each turn, you will manage your hand of cards to attack your opponent, fighting to break through their armor and defeat them before they can manage to do the same to you.  Your cards can be used in several different ways, and deciding when to commit a card to an attack versus hold it back for defense or to use to assume a battle stance is at the heart of Katana and what makes it an engaging, streamlined experience.

Catacombs Cubes Review (featuring Monuments Expansion)

In Catacombs Cubes, players will work to build up the most impressive town they can, as well as be the ones to contribute the most to the two palace cards which are being communally built by all players.  In order to be the best architect and earn the most points, each player will draft resources in the form of (you guessed it) cubes, which come in several different configurations.

Roar and Write Kickstarter Preview

Roar and Write is a new roll & write game from Galactic Raptor Games and a spiritual successor to the absolutely fantastic and completely gorgeous Animal Kingdoms.  While the original was a great hand management/area majority game, Roar and Write trades in the cards for dice and gives each player their own kingdom scorepad to keep track of.  The goal is still the same – be the player with the most points at the end to win the game and be named the new ruler, but can Roar and Write keep up with its predecessor?  Let’s find out!

Squire for Hire: Mystic Runes Review

We recently did a Game in a Minute feature on Squire for Hire, and for those who can’t spare the 60 seconds to watch it I will summarize here by saying that it’s a light, fun, super-portable little puzzle of a microgame that we’ve really enjoyed.  It’s not every game that sings the song of the unsung heroes of every fantasy adventure – the people in charge of organizing and carrying the hero’s bags!  We loved the art and found its modest card count belied a game that delivered a delicious bite of gameplay.
